Kickback, Riving Knife, Splitter, and Anti-Kickback Pawls Explained
Kickback is the sudden movement of a workpiece back toward the table-saw operator after the blade catches, binds, or lifts it. A riving knife or splitter helps keep the cut kerf from closing on the rear of the blade. Anti-kickback pawls are toothed devices intended to resist reverse travel.
These parts reduce particular risks. They do not make freehand cutting, a misaligned fence, unstable stock, or hands near the blade safe.

Kickback
OSHA describes kickback as the blade catching stock and throwing it toward the operator. It occurs more often in ripping—cutting parallel to the grain—than in crosscutting. Binding, twisting stock, poor fence alignment, a dull or unsuitable blade, foreign objects, and missing or malfunctioning safeguards can contribute.
Kickback is not only a “board flies backward” event. A workpiece can lift, rotate, pull a hand toward the blade, or create a sudden loss of control. Standing out of the likely line of fire is useful guidance, but position alone does not control the causes.
Riving knife
A riving knife is a curved plate installed directly behind the blade. CPSC technical material explains that it attaches to the same structural mechanism as the blade, so it rises and lowers with the blade while maintaining a close relationship to it.
That movement is the main distinction from a traditional fixed splitter. Many riving knives can remain installed for some non-through cuts, but the permitted positions and guard combination are saw-specific.
The knife must match the blade body and kerf requirements in the manual. A plate that is too thick for the kerf can block the workpiece; one too thin or misaligned may not control kerf closure as intended. Do not bend, grind, or substitute a riving knife to make it fit.
Splitter
A splitter is also a plate behind the blade that helps prevent the workpiece from squeezing the blade during a rip cut. On many traditional systems it is fixed relative to the table and incorporated into the blade-guard assembly.
Because a fixed splitter does not move with blade height, older designs may require its removal for some non-through cuts. That is one reason modern riving-knife systems can remain closer to the blade through more settings. Use only the configuration described for the exact saw and cut, and reinstall removed guarding immediately when directed.
Anti-kickback pawls
Anti-kickback pawls are toothed arms that ride on the stock. They allow feed in the cutting direction and are intended to catch the surface if it moves backward.
Pawls need to move freely, face the correct direction, and contact the material as designed. DEWALT's table-saw manual cautions that hard, slippery plastic and composite materials may not be stopped by the pawls. This is a useful limit: the presence of pawls is not a guarantee that kickback cannot happen.
Blade guard
The blade guard forms a barrier over the exposed blade for operations where it can be used. It works alongside—not instead of—the riving knife or splitter and anti-kickback assembly.
Do not remove a guard because it slows setup or hides a pencil line. If a cut legitimately requires a different configuration, use the exact manual procedure, alternative guard or low-profile riving knife supplied for that operation, and all specified work-control devices.
Rip fence
The rip fence guides stock parallel to the blade for rip cuts. If it angles toward the rear of the blade or the work loses contact and rotates, the offcut or workpiece can become trapped.
Never use the rip fence and miter gauge together as an improvised two-sided guide unless the saw's instructions provide a clearance block or named procedure. Never make a freehand table-saw cut.
Push stick and work control
A push stick or push block helps keep hands away from the blade while maintaining controlled feed. It is not a repair for warped stock, an incorrect fence, a missing guard, or a cut too small for the saw.
Before a rip cut:
- Disconnect power for setup as the manual directs.
- Confirm the blade, riving knife/splitter, guard, and pawls are compatible and aligned.
- Check that the fence locks parallel and the work has a straight reference edge.
- Provide stable infeed and outfeed support without trapping the cut pieces.
- Remove nails, screws, loose knots, and other foreign objects.
- Plan hand position, push-device use, and where both pieces will go after the cut.
Stop if the board pinches, lifts, chatters, or requires force. Keep power off until the blade stops completely before reaching near the cutting area.
What matters when buying
For a table saw, confirm the complete guarding system is present, identified in the manual, adjustable for intended cuts, and supported with replacement parts. Check the riving-knife positions, compatible blade dimensions, fence adjustment, push-stick storage, and dust-control connection. A brake or electronic feature does not replace these mechanical controls.
