RPM, BPM, IPM, SPM, and OPM: Tool Speed Terms Explained
RPM counts rotation. BPM and IPM count repeated percussion or impact events. SPM counts reciprocating strokes. OPM counts oscillations or orbits. They are not interchangeable, and a maximum rate does not prove how quickly a tool will drill, cut, sand, or drive a fastener under load.

RPM
RPM means revolutions per minute. It counts complete rotations of a shaft, spindle, chuck, or accessory. NIST gives 1 RPM as approximately 0.1047198 radians per second.
A drill may list two speed ranges. A grinder may list one maximum speed. A router may offer a variable range. The number must be read with the tool type and accessory.
Common mix-up: RPM is speed, not torque. A higher no-load RPM does not by itself prove faster drilling or cutting. Material, accessory geometry, pressure, gearing, motor control, and battery or line-power conditions all affect work under load.
No-load speed
No-load speed is the speed measured while the tool is running without the accessory doing useful work. Manufacturers commonly publish this because it is a repeatable tool specification. Working speed can drop or be electronically controlled when the bit, wheel, blade, or pad meets the material.
Compare no-load RPM with no-load RPM, and keep every mode or range attached to the number. Do not rewrite a 0–2,000 no-load RPM specification as “runs at 2,000 RPM while drilling.”
Accessory speed is a safety check. The accessory's marked rated speed must meet or exceed the tool's maximum speed where the manual requires it. OSHA's abrasive-wheel rule also requires checking spindle speed against the wheel's marked maximum before mounting.
BPM
BPM usually means blows per minute on hammer drills, rotary hammers, and breakers. It counts how often the percussion mechanism strikes. Readers may also encounter “beats per minute,” but the exact manufacturer wording should control model-specific copy.
BPM does not identify energy per blow. Bosch lists one rotary hammer with separate no-load RPM, no-load BPM, and impact-energy values. That separation is the important lesson: strike rate, rotational speed, and strike energy answer different questions.
When comparing a hammer, also check:
- SDS-plus, SDS-max, or another bit interface
- Drilling/chipping modes
- Stated material and diameter capacity
- Impact energy when published under a defined method
- Auxiliary handle, vibration controls, dust control, and operating weight
IPM
IPM means impacts per minute. It is common on impact drivers and impact wrenches. The motor rotates the drive, while the impact mechanism adds repeated strikes when resistance rises.
IPM is not torque. Makita's official specifications list RPM, IPM, and maximum torque separately across modes. A tool with more impacts per minute is not automatically stronger or better controlled.
For cabinet hardware, small fasteners, and finish-sensitive work, a useful low-speed or assist mode may matter more than the largest IPM headline. For larger fasteners, verify the exact tool type, socket or bit, fastener specification, and final tightening method.
SPM
SPM means strokes per minute. It counts the back-and-forth cycles of a reciprocating mechanism. A jigsaw or reciprocating saw can list a variable SPM range.
SPM should be paired with stroke length. Two saws can have similar SPM but move the blade a different distance in each stroke. Blade type, tooth pitch, material, orbital action where applicable, and support of the work also affect the cut.
DEWALT's current jig-saw page, for example, publishes a variable 0–3,100 SPM range. That is a model-specific specification, not a recommended speed for every blade or material.
OPM
OPM can mean oscillations per minute on a multi-tool or orbits per minute on a sander. The abbreviation is the same, but the physical motion differs.
On an oscillating multi-tool, also check oscillation angle and the accessory interface. On a random-orbit sander, orbit diameter, pad size, abrasive system, and dust collection matter. Makita and Bosch publish variable OPM ranges alongside these separate specifications.
Common mix-up: A larger OPM number does not automatically mean a finer finish. Abrasive grit, orbit size, pressure, pad condition, dust loading, material, and speed setting all contribute.
How to compare tool-speed labels
- Identify the motion: rotation, impact, stroke, oscillation, or orbit.
- Keep
maximum,no-load, and the operating mode attached to the value. - Check the second specification: torque, impact energy, stroke length, or oscillation/orbit size.
- Verify the accessory interface and its maximum speed.
- Match the speed range to the exact accessory and material instructions.
- Compare values under like conditions rather than ranking every tool by one maximum.
Common mistakes
- Reading BPM or IPM as RPM.
- Treating no-load speed as guaranteed speed in material.
- Assuming more impacts per minute means more torque.
- Ignoring stroke length when comparing saw SPM.
- Ignoring oscillation angle or orbit diameter when comparing OPM.
- Using an accessory whose rated speed is below the tool's maximum.
