A fastener's grade or property class identifies a standards-based set of material and mechanical-property requirements. Embedment depth is how far the working portion of an anchor engages the base material. Neither term is a stand-alone load rating.
The connection also depends on diameter, thread, base material, fixture thickness, edge distance, spacing, hole preparation, installation torque or setting procedure, environment, and load direction.

Fastener grade
In U.S. hardware, grade commonly appears on inch-series bolts and structural fasteners. The word is incomplete without the governing standard. SAE, ASTM, and other systems can use different dimensions, markings, quality requirements, coatings, and intended connections.
Do not identify a bolt only by color. Check the head marking, diameter, threads per inch, length, material/coating, and the project or equipment specification. Replace a specified bolt with the same documented type unless the equipment manufacturer or responsible designer approves a substitution.
AISC gives a useful warning: SAE J429 Grade 5 and ASTM structural Grade A325 bolts can have equivalent strength properties, but AISC says they are not acceptable substitutes because the specifications differ in dimensions and quality-assurance requirements. “Same strength” is therefore not the same as “same fastener.”
Metric property class
Metric steel bolts may carry property classes such as 8.8 or 10.9. Under the ISO-style convention summarized in Bossard technical data, the first number relates to nominal tensile strength and the second to the ratio used to obtain nominal yield or proof behavior.
For a simplified reading of 8.8:
- First number:
8 × 100 = 800 MPanominal tensile-strength value - Second number:
8 ÷ 10 = 0.8ratio - Simplified yield-strength relationship:
800 × 0.8 = 640 MPa
This is a decoding aid, not a design calculation or permission to substitute. The product standard, diameter, thread pitch, nut property class, plating, temperature, tightening method, and joint design still control. A metric property class is not an SAE grade translated into millimeters.
Anchor
An anchor connects a fixture to a base material. Common consumer categories include:
- Concrete screws that cut or form engagement in a prepared hole
- Expansion anchors that press against masonry or concrete
- Adhesive anchors that bond a rod or insert into a cleaned hole
- Hollow-wall anchors that engage behind or within a panel
- Wood screws or structural screws that engage solid wood framing
The category name does not establish capacity. A drywall anchor is not automatically suitable for masonry, overhead loads, cabinets, handrails, or life-safety use. Use an anchor whose published instructions name the exact base material and application.
Embedment depth
Embedment depth is the installed depth that the anchor system uses to transfer load into approved base material. Manufacturer documents may distinguish nominal embedment, effective embedment, hole depth, and anchor length. These are not always equal.
More embedment is not automatically better. Some metal anchors have discrete approved setting depths. A deeper hole may be required for dust clearance but may not count as additional effective embedment. An anchor installed too shallow, too deep, in an oversized hole, or without the specified cleaning and setting procedure may not perform as documented.
Base material
The base material is what receives the anchor: for example, normal-weight concrete, concrete masonry unit, brick, gypsum panel, or solid wood framing. “Concrete” alone can be insufficient. Strength, cracking condition, hollow versus solid construction, grout, material thickness, and condition can matter.
Confirm what is behind a finished surface. Tile, paneling, or drywall may be only a finish layer; the required connection may need to reach framing or another approved substrate.
Edge distance and spacing
Edge distance is the distance from an anchor centerline to a free edge. Spacing is the distance between anchors. Anchors placed too close to an edge or to one another can interact with the same limited region of base material.
Do not invent a “two inches from every edge” rule. Minimum values are anchor- and base-material-specific. Follow the current installation instructions or an approved design.
Fixture thickness
Fixture thickness is the material clamped between the fastener head, nut, or washer and the base. It affects required anchor length and usable embedment. Include brackets, washers, shims, finish layers, and stand-offs when following the manufacturer's selection table.

Safety boundary
Do not use ordinary consumer anchors as fall-protection anchorages. OSHA's fall-protection guidance treats those as engineered safety systems attached to adequate structural members and installed to manufacturer instructions. The same word “anchor” does not make the products interchangeable.
Frequently asked questions
Is Grade 8 the same as property class 8.8?
No. They belong to different standards systems and the similar numeral does not establish equivalence.
Does anchor length equal embedment depth?
Not necessarily. Fixture thickness, washers, unthreaded sections, setting components, and hole requirements can make the values different.
Can I reuse an anchor?
Only if the exact manufacturer instructions allow it for that anchor and condition. Many anchors are single-installation products.
