How to Store Lithium-Ion Tool Batteries Between Projects

For most owners, good battery storage is straightforward: remove the pack from the tool, inspect it, keep it in a cool and dry place, protect its terminals from metal objects, and follow the exact battery manual for temperature and charge-state instructions. Keep the charger in a ventilated location and use only a documented battery–charger combination.

The details matter because “lithium-ion tool battery” describes a broad category, not one universal storage recipe. A manufacturer may specify a storage temperature range, a different charging range, or a particular charge indicator routine for one pack. Use those model-specific instructions instead of a fixed percentage copied from a different platform.

Quick answer: Store an intact pack where it will not be crushed, wet, overheated, frozen, or shorted by keys, screws, nails, or other metal. Do not open the pack, tape over damage and keep using it, or place it on an unapproved charger.

Start with the exact label and manual

Before setting up a storage area, record three numbers:

  1. Battery pack model or catalog number
  2. Charger model or catalog number
  3. Tool platform and voltage designation

Then locate the current instructions from the manufacturer. The pack may fit a tool or charger physically without being an approved combination. The manual should control charging temperature, long-term charge recommendations, ventilation, inspection, and what to do after abnormal heat or damage.

Choose a cool, dry, ordinary indoor location

OSHA’s lithium-ion guidance calls for dry, cool storage and following manufacturer instructions. In a home workshop, that usually points to an indoor cabinet, shelf, or case away from:

  • Direct sunlight through a window
  • Furnaces, heaters, stoves, hot pipes, and vehicle exhaust
  • Standing water, roof leaks, and heavy condensation
  • Flammable liquids, oily rags, and easily ignited clutter
  • An edge where a pack can fall onto concrete
  • A vehicle interior or unconditioned metal shed that can become extremely hot

“Cool” does not mean refrigerated. A refrigerator can introduce condensation, and a freezer may fall outside the pack’s permitted range. Do not invent a storage temperature: use the manual’s actual limits.

The storage and charging ranges may differ. A cold-soaked or hot pack may need to return to a permitted temperature before charging. Some chargers show a hot/cold delay; interpret that indicator using the charger manual rather than bypassing it.

Remove the battery from the tool

Unless the exact instructions say otherwise, separating the pack from the tool is a sensible between-project routine. It lets you inspect both items and reduces the chance that the trigger or switch will be activated during handling.

With the pack removed:

  • Clean only as directed in the manual.
  • Keep vents and contact areas free of packed dust.
  • Do not insert tools into the contacts.
  • Do not use solvent, water spray, or compressed air unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it.
  • Store the tool so its switch cannot be activated by other objects.

Do not treat the pack as a handle for carrying the tool. Do not suspend a tool by the battery connection.

Protect the terminals from short circuits

Battery contacts should not share a drawer or loose bag with screws, drill bits, nails, keys, coins, sockets, chain, or other conductive objects. Metal across the terminals can create a short circuit and intense heat.

Use the manufacturer’s terminal cap, an intact individual compartment, or the pack’s specified case where provided. Avoid improvised materials that can trap moisture, press a release, or contact vents. Do not stack packs where weight can deform a housing or contact area.

CPSC has specifically warned consumers not to use loose 18650 cells removed or separated from battery packs. A complete tool pack includes a housing and protective system designed for that product. Opening it, rebuilding it with unknown cells, or carrying loose cells is not a storage shortcut.

Inspect before the pack goes on the shelf

Look at the pack under good light. Stop using or charging it if you notice a condition the manual identifies as unsafe, including:

  • Cracking, crushing, puncture, or a separated housing
  • Swelling or a changed shape
  • Leaking, unusual residue, or corrosion at contacts
  • Burn marks, melted plastic, or an unusual odor
  • Hissing, popping, smoke, or heat that is not normal for the stated operation
  • A fall, impact, water exposure, or overheating event that may have damaged it

Do not “test it one more time” on a charger. Move people away from an actively smoking, hissing, or burning battery and call emergency services. Do not handle a hot or venting pack or improvise a suppression method; follow local emergency instructions and the manufacturer’s current guidance.

For a damaged but stable pack, isolate it only as directed by the manufacturer or local authority and arrange appropriate disposal. Shipping rules for damaged lithium batteries are stricter than ordinary consumer returns, so do not mail one without instructions.

Charge level: follow the pack, not a universal percentage

Online advice often repeats one “ideal” long-term percentage. Tool platforms do not all publish the same consumer instruction, their fuel gauges are approximate, and some manuals specify only periodic charging or avoiding a fully depleted state.

Use this order:

  1. Exact battery instructions
  2. Exact charger instructions
  3. Manufacturer support for the model

If the instructions do not state a long-term percentage, do not create one. Avoid intentionally running the pack to tool shutdown solely for storage unless the manual says to do so. A fuel-gauge bar is not laboratory state-of-charge measurement.

Build a safer charging spot

Storage and charging are separate decisions. Set the charger on the surface and in the orientation specified by its manual, with ventilation openings clear. Keep it away from water, heat sources, flammable clutter, and places where its cord can be cut, pinched, tripped over, or pulled by the plug.

Before charging:

  • Confirm the charger is approved for the exact pack.
  • Inspect the cord, plug, charger housing, and battery.
  • Let a pack reach the permitted temperature.
  • Check the indicator definitions in the manual.
  • Keep the area observable; do not cover the charger.

Do not use an adapter, modified contact, generic replacement charger, extension cord, or power strip merely because it seems to work. Check both the charger instructions and the electrical device rating. Never force a pack into a charger.

For seasonal or long gaps

If a mower, blower, saw, or other tool will sit for months, make a small record rather than relying on memory:

  • Pack and charger model numbers
  • Date stored
  • Visual condition
  • Fuel-gauge indication, if the pack provides one
  • Manual’s storage range and periodic-check instruction
  • Recall check date

At the manufacturer’s interval, inspect the storage area and pack without charging a damaged unit. Look for moisture, pest damage, corroded hardware nearby, a tripped charger cord, or changes to the housing.

Check the exact model on the CPSC recall database before returning a seasonal pack to service. A recall involving one capacity, date code, or production range is not evidence that the whole brand or platform is affected—and a different-looking pack is not proof that it is excluded.

Before returning a battery to use

Use a deliberate restart:

  1. Recheck the housing, terminals, label, and latch.
  2. Confirm the tool and charger model pairing.
  3. Let the pack reach the manufacturer’s permitted operating or charging temperature.
  4. Charge only if and as instructed.
  5. Watch the first charge for abnormal heat, odor, noise, smoke, or an unfamiliar error indication.
  6. Stop and consult the manual or manufacturer if behavior differs from the documented pattern.

A pack that has lost noticeable runtime is not automatically dangerous, but a sudden change can justify closer inspection and manufacturer support. Do not open the housing to diagnose cells or electronics.

Disposal and transport are not ordinary trash handling

Lithium-ion batteries should not go in household trash or curbside recycling bins. EPA directs consumers to appropriate battery-recycling or household hazardous-waste collection. Protect terminals and follow the receiving program’s preparation rules.

Air and ground transport rules vary by battery rating, condition, packaging, and shipment purpose. A battery installed in equipment may be treated differently from a spare; a damaged or recalled pack may have special restrictions. Use current carrier and PHMSA instructions rather than packing it like a normal return.

A practical storage checklist

  • Exact battery, charger, and platform identified
  • Current manuals saved
  • Pack removed from tool
  • Housing and contacts intact
  • Cool, dry location within stated limits
  • Away from heat, water, combustibles, and impact
  • Terminals separated from loose metal
  • Charge state handled according to the exact manual
  • Recall checked by model and date code
  • Return-to-use and recycling plan recorded

Good storage will not make a battery last forever or correct prior damage. It reduces avoidable exposure and makes changes easier to notice.
