Cordless Pool Vacuum Buying Checklist: Pool Size, Debris, Filters, and Charging

Cordless Pool Vacuum Buying Checklist: Pool Size, Debris, Filters, and Charging

A cordless pool vacuum is useful only if it matches the pool it can physically navigate and the debris its filter can hold. A 90-minute runtime does not prove that a robot cleans your entire pool. “Wall climbing” does not prove it cleans steps or a waterline. A fine filter may capture silt but clog quickly during a heavy leaf cleanup.

Start with the pool, not the cleaner: dimensions, shape, floor profile, walls, steps, finish, depth, and normal debris. Then decide whether you need a manual handheld vacuum for spot work or a robotic unit for an automatic cycle.

Quick answer: Choose handheld for stairs, corners, spas, spot debris, and direct control. Choose robotic when its exact manual confirms your pool dimensions, floor profile, surface, depth, and desired floor/wall/waterline coverage. For either type, verify filter, retrieval, cleaning, dry-charging instructions, replacement parts, and recall status.

Handheld or robotic?

Cordless handheld vacuum

A handheld unit puts the cleaning path under your control. It may connect to a standard pool pole and suit small pools, spas, steps, benches, corners, or quick cleanup between full filter cycles.

It still requires you to move the head, manage the filter, and remain safely positioned. Head width, pole connection, brush shape, minimum water depth, debris chamber, and filter options matter more than app features.

Cordless robotic cleaner

A robot runs a defined cycle with an internal filter. Models differ widely: floor-only, floor and wall, or floor/wall/waterline. Maytronics notes that wall climbing, step coverage, and waterline cleaning vary by model and should be explicitly confirmed.

Robots reduce manual pushing but add retrieval, charging, drive tracks, brushes, sensors, firmware, and replacement-part questions. Complex geometry can leave missed areas even when the pool's maximum length is within the listing.

Record the pool before shopping

Write down:

  • Above-ground or in-ground.
  • Maximum length and width.
  • Water depth range.
  • Flat, dished, sloped, or hopper floor.
  • Round, rectangular, freeform, or sharp corners.
  • Vinyl, fiberglass, plaster, tile, or other finish.
  • Walls, waterline, stairs, benches, ledges, drains, and covers.
  • Obstacles such as ladders or main drains.

Compare each item with the exact manual. One Maytronics support page, for example, limits a specific floor-only model to flat-surface pools up to a stated length and depth range. Those numbers are useful only for that model; they show the detail a good listing should provide.

If the manufacturer does not clearly address your pool shape or finish, ask before purchase. Do not treat “universal pool cleaner” as a specification.

Match the filter to debris

List what usually enters the pool:

  • Large leaves and seed pods.
  • Grass and small plant fragments.
  • Sand and fine silt.
  • Insects and hair.
  • Pollen or suspended fine material.

Coarse mesh can handle larger debris with less rapid clogging. Fine or pleated filters can capture smaller particles but may reduce flow sooner when loaded. Maytronics recommends a coarse/fine sequence for certain systems and notes that ultra-fine filters can require cleaning during a debris-heavy cycle.

Check:

  • Filter type and stated particle size, if documented.
  • Basket or bag capacity.
  • Top, bottom, or disassembly access.
  • Whether hands contact debris during emptying.
  • Rinsing method and drying requirements.
  • Replacement filter part numbers and compatibility.

A lower micron number is not automatically better for every cleanup. It must remain usable with your debris and pump design.

Coverage is a list, not a promise

For a robot, verify each surface separately:

Area What to confirm
Floor Pool length, shape, slope, drains, and finish.
Cove/wall transition Whether the drive system can make the transition.
Walls Explicit wall-climbing support for your surface.
Waterline A named waterline mode or feature.
Steps and benches Explicit step/ledge capability; many units cannot clean them reliably.

For a handheld, compare head width with corners and steps, and verify minimum operating depth. A wide head may cover the floor faster but fail in a spa seat or tight radius.

Runtime should be evaluated against cycle design. A robot that runs 90 minutes may clean one floor pattern; another may use longer wall passes. Battery condition, water temperature, debris load, filter restriction, and mode can change performance.

Retrieval and lifting

A cleaner is heavier when filled with water and debris. Confirm the approved retrieval point: handle, hook, line, or pole accessory. Do not pull a cord, charger lead, floating cable, or moving part unless the manual specifically identifies it as the retrieval method.

Plan a dry, stable place to set the cleaner. Drain it over the pool as directed before lifting fully. Avoid twisting from an extended position. If the unit is too heavy or the pool edge is awkward, choose a lighter cleaner or an approved caddy/retrieval system.

Never operate a suction cleaner while swimmers are present when the manual prohibits it. A Water Tech manual warns of suction entrapment and directs that bathers not be present.

Charging belongs in a dry area

Cordless does not remove electrical and battery risk. The CPSC identifies pool vacuums and other electrical pool equipment as potential shock sources. A Water Tech manual directs users to charge indoors in a clean, dry place, use only the supplied charger, keep the charging jack dry, and avoid wet-hand connection.

Follow the exact model instructions for:

  • Required charger and input power.
  • GFCI-protected outlet where specified.
  • Minimum charger distance and height from the pool.
  • Drying the port before connection.
  • Charge temperature and maximum time.
  • Indicator meanings.
  • Long-term storage and recharge schedule.

Do not improvise an adapter or charge a wet cleaner because the connector appears sealed. Water and pool chemicals can remain around contacts.

Check recalls by exact model and serial number

In 2025, CPSC announced a recall of a specific Aiper cordless robotic pool-cleaner model because its adapter could overheat. That does not condemn all Aiper cleaners or all cordless pool vacuums. It demonstrates why model and serial-number recall checks belong in the buying and maintenance routine.

Check CPSC and the manufacturer's safety-notice page before first use, when buying used, and periodically during ownership. Follow the recall remedy exactly; do not resell or donate a recalled product when prohibited.

Cleaning does not replace water treatment

A vacuum removes physical debris. It does not disinfect water, set pH, replace circulation, or resolve a fecal contamination event.

CDC recommends routine chlorine and pH testing for home pools. It also explicitly says not to vacuum feces from a pool; that event requires the CDC or local health-authority response procedure. Never present a vacuum as a sanitation device unless the exact regulated product documentation supports a specific claim.

After-use care

Follow the manual, but a typical sequence is:

  1. Turn the cleaner off and retrieve it by the approved method.
  2. Let water drain safely.
  3. Remove and empty the basket or bag.
  4. Rinse the filter as directed; avoid damaging fine media.
  5. Inspect intake, impeller area, brushes, tracks, seals, and charging port.
  6. Remove entangled hair only with the tool off and isolated from power.
  7. Dry the cleaner and connector before charging.
  8. Store out of direct sun and extreme temperature where specified.

Do not service a sealed battery, motor, or charger unless the manual authorizes user service.

Value checklist

A cleaner is a better value when it answers “yes” to the important questions:

  • Exact pool shape, length, depth, finish, and slope are supported.
  • Desired floor/wall/waterline/step coverage is explicit.
  • Filter matches normal debris and is easy to obtain.
  • Runtime is tied to a named mode and battery.
  • Retrieval is manageable when the unit is wet.
  • Charger and dry-charging setup fit the available space.
  • Wear parts and support are available.
  • Current recall status is clear.
  • Cleaning routine is realistic after every use.

App control and scheduling are secondary if the machine cannot reach the surfaces or hold the debris.

Buy for the pool you have. A simple handheld may provide better value for a spa, steps, and spot cleanup. A robot may save effort when its documented navigation, coverage, filter, runtime, and retrieval match the entire pool. In both cases, dry charging as directed, recall checks, filter care, and normal water treatment remain essential.
