A GFCI, an equipment-grounding conductor, and double insulation are different protective approaches. One does not automatically replace the others, and none makes a damaged cord or wet tool safe.

Use the tool exactly as labeled, keep every protective feature intact, and match any extension cord to the tool manual, environment, length, and electrical load.

GFCI

GFCI means ground-fault circuit interrupter. It monitors current flowing out and returning through a circuit. When it detects an imbalance consistent with current leaking along an unintended path, it interrupts power quickly.

A GFCI protects people from certain ground-fault shock hazards. It is not the same as a circuit breaker, and it does not make contact with live conductors harmless. CPSC identifies fixed receptacles, GFCI breakers, and portable cord-connected units as common forms.

Use GFCI protection where the electrical code, workplace rule, tool manual, or environment requires it—especially around moisture. Test it according to the device instructions. If it trips repeatedly, stop and find the fault rather than holding reset or bypassing protection.

Grounded tool and equipment grounding

A grounded corded tool commonly has a three-prong plug. The equipment-grounding conductor provides a continuous path intended to carry fault current from exposed conductive parts. The grounding pin is a safety component, not an inconvenience.

Never remove the grounding pin, defeat a polarized plug, or use an adapter that breaks the required grounding path. A three-slot outlet is not proof that the grounding connection is correct.

OSHA construction rules distinguish the grounded circuit conductor from the equipment-grounding conductor and require grounding paths to be permanent and continuous. Those are workplace requirements, but the distinction is useful for homeowners too.

Double-insulated

A double-insulated tool uses an insulation system designed so that it does not rely on an equipment-grounding conductor in the same way as a grounded metal-cased tool. It often has a two-prong plug and a double-square marking, but the exact label and manual control.

Double-insulated does not mean waterproof, shockproof, or safe with damaged insulation. OSHA specifically warns that even a double-insulated tool dropped in water should not be grabbed until power is disconnected.

Do not add a grounding wire, alter the plug, open the housing, or treat a two-prong tool as double-insulated without the required marking and instructions.

Extension cord

An extension cord is a factory-assembled flexible cord used to extend power from a receptacle to portable equipment. Its suitability depends on more than length.

Check:

  • Conductor size: In American Wire Gauge, a smaller gauge number indicates a larger conductor. Use the manual's table for the tool's current and total cord length.
  • Length: A longer cord can increase voltage drop. The correct gauge may change as length increases.
  • Load: Add the actual loads when more than one device is supplied; do not exceed the cord or circuit rating.
  • Environment: Use a cord identified for outdoor or wet-location use when required. Keep connections dry and protected.
  • Condition: Look for cut insulation, crushed sections, loose blades, missing grounding pins, overheated ends, or makeshift repairs.

CPSC identifies minimum wire size, strain relief, polarization, continuity, and outdoor jacketing among important extension-cord safety characteristics. The tool manual remains the controlling source for the exact gauge-and-length combination.

What affects a purchase

For a corded tool, read the nameplate and manual before choosing supporting equipment:

  1. Does it require a grounded receptacle, or is it marked double-insulated?
  2. Does the task location require GFCI protection?
  3. What amperage and extension-cord table does the manual specify?
  4. Will the cord be used outdoors, in damp conditions, or across traffic paths?
  5. Can the tool reach without creating a trip, cut, pinch, or heat hazard?

An inexpensive cord is poor value if it is undersized, damaged, or wrong for the location.

Common mistakes

  • Calling a GFCI an overload protector.
  • Assuming a grounded plug removes the need for GFCI protection.
  • Removing a grounding pin to fit an old receptacle.
  • Calling any two-prong tool double-insulated.
  • Using household indoor cords outside.
  • Choosing cord gauge without considering total length and tool current.
  • Running cords through doors, under rugs, or across cutting paths.
  • Repairing damaged insulation with tape and returning the cord to service.

Does a GFCI replace grounding?

No. They address electrical risk differently. Follow the wiring, grounding, and GFCI requirements that apply to the exact equipment and location.

Can I use a larger-gauge-number cord because the tool only runs briefly?

Do not improvise. Use the tool manufacturer's extension-cord table and the cord's marked ratings. Short duration does not justify an undersized conductor.
