Compressor Tank, Duty Cycle, Regulator, and CFM at PSI
An air compressor's tank size tells you how much compressed air it can store. CFM at a stated PSI tells you more about how quickly the pump can supply air under a specified pressure condition. Duty cycle limits or describes the intended run/rest pattern, while the regulator sets outlet pressure for the connected tool.
A large tank does not automatically mean high air delivery, and a high maximum PSI does not automatically mean the compressor can keep up with an air-hungry tool.
Compressor tank or air receiver
The tank—also called a receiver—stores compressed air. CAGI defines a receiver as a vessel or tank used to store gas under pressure.
A larger gallon rating can provide a longer buffer before tank pressure falls enough for the pump to restart. It can help with short bursts such as some nailing tasks. It does not create air. For continuous tools, the pump's delivered airflow and duty cycle determine whether the system keeps up.
Tank condition is a safety issue. Moisture condenses inside many tanks. DEWALT's compressor instructions require draining the tank and warn that internal corrosion can weaken it and create a rupture hazard. Follow the exact drain procedure; do not drill, weld, patch, or alter a pressure vessel.
Tank pressure and outlet pressure
The tank gauge indicates stored pressure in the receiver. The regulated outlet gauge indicates pressure available downstream of the regulator. They can show different values and answer different questions.
Do not set outlet pressure from the tank gauge. Adjust the regulator while watching the regulated gauge and stay within the hose, connector, and air-tool manufacturer's maximum ratings.
Regulator
The regulator controls outlet pressure. Turning the knob does not increase the pump's airflow capacity or tank strength. If a tool requires more airflow than the compressor can supply, raising the regulator above the tool limit is unsafe and will not solve the mismatch.
Regulators also exhibit flow behavior under demand. CAGI defines droop as the reduction in regulator outlet pressure when demand occurs. A static gauge reading with no air flowing may not match pressure during operation.
Cut-in and cut-out pressure
Cut-in pressure is the tank pressure at which the pressure switch restarts the motor. Cut-out pressure is the higher tank pressure at which it stops the motor.
Those are automatic pump-control points, not the correct operating pressure for every tool. The regulator sets the separate outlet target.
Never alter pressure-switch or safety-valve settings unless the manufacturer authorizes a specified service procedure. Do not pull or block a safety valve except as the manual directs for inspection.
Duty cycle
Duty cycle describes the permitted or recommended relationship between running and rest time under stated conditions. It is model-specific.
One DEWALT manual describes a 50 percent duty cycle as no more than five minutes running in ten. Another version for a different configuration says the pump can run continuously but recommends a 50–75 percent average cycle to extend life. That difference is why a generic chart is unsafe.
For intermittent nailing, a lower duty-cycle unit may be adequate. Grinding, sanding, spraying, or other continuous-demand work can require more sustained output. Check the manual, ambient-temperature limits, ventilation clearance, and overload-reset instructions.
CFM at PSI
CFM means cubic feet per minute. SCFM is a standardized airflow expression based on stated reference conditions. Compressor listings often report delivery such as 5.0 SCFM at 90 PSI.
Compare compressors at the same pressure and, when possible, under the same test standard. Delivery usually changes with pressure. A DEWALT stationary model, for example, separately reports 16.1 CFM at 40 PSI and 14 CFM at 90 PSI. Selecting only the larger number would hide the condition.
Then compare the compressor's delivery with the pneumatic tool's required airflow at its stated working pressure. For intermittent tools, manufacturers may publish an average demand; continuous use can require more. Include hose length, internal diameter, fittings, leakage, and regulator drop in the real setup.
What affects a purchase
- Tool airflow required at operating PSI
- Compressor CFM or SCFM at that same PSI
- Duty cycle and expected continuous run time
- Tank size and recovery time
- Regulator range and number/type of outlets
- Circuit requirement and extension-cord restriction
- Noise rating under stated conditions
- Portability, drain access, maintenance, and storage temperature
Buying only by tank gallons or maximum PSI can leave you with a compressor that pauses too often or cannot maintain the tool.
Safety boundaries
Never direct compressed air at skin or clothing. OSHA workplace rules limit compressed air used for cleaning to less than 30 PSI and require chip guarding and PPE; that limit is not permission to use air on the body. Wear eye protection, secure the hose against whip, inspect rated accessories, drain the tank, and disconnect/unpressurize before service.

- Comparing CFM figures at different PSI.
- Raising outlet pressure to compensate for inadequate airflow.
- Assuming every compressor has the same duty cycle.
- Reading the tank gauge as tool pressure.

Frequently asked questions
Is a bigger tank always better?
No. It provides more stored-air buffer but adds size and weight. Pump delivery, duty cycle, recovery, and the tool's demand may matter more.
Should compressor CFM exceed tool CFM?
The compressor must meet the tool's actual demand at the required pressure and work pattern. Allowing practical margin can help, but do not invent one universal multiplier; use both manufacturers' data.
