SDS-Plus, SDS-Max, and Rotary-Hammer Modes Explained
SDS-Plus and SDS-Max are different bit-holder families used on rotary hammers. They are not interchangeable sizes. A tool's mode selector then determines whether it rotates, hammers, or does both.
Choose the holder, bit, mode, and dust-control setup as one system. A powerful hammer is not useful if the required bit does not fit or the tool lacks the needed operating mode.
Rotary hammer
A rotary hammer drills masonry with a dedicated impact mechanism while rotating a masonry bit. It differs from a standard drill/driver with a hammer setting in its holder, mechanism, and typical application range.
Rotary hammers commonly publish impact energy in joules, blows per minute, no-load RPM, and a rated drilling capacity. Those figures are model-specific. More joules do not automatically mean a better purchase; weight, bit range, vibration control, dust extraction, clutch behavior, and project scale matter.
SDS-Plus
SDS-Plus is a common holder for compact through mid-size rotary hammers. Bosch describes its SDS-Plus line as aimed at light-to-medium concrete and masonry work, with tools offering rotary drilling, hammer drilling, and chiseling depending on model.
The slotted shank locks into the matching holder while allowing the axial movement the hammer mechanism needs. Bit diameter and overall length still must fall within the exact tool manual's limits.
Typical consumer uses include anchor holes, small penetrations, tile removal, and light chipping. That is a use pattern, not a guarantee that every SDS-Plus tool can perform every one of those tasks.
SDS-Max
SDS-Max is a larger, different holder associated with heavier rotary and combination hammers. Manufacturer manuals show it with larger drilling and chiseling equipment. An SDS-Max bit does not fit an SDS-Plus holder, and a larger shank does not by itself prove suitability for a specific hole or anchor.
SDS-Max tools usually cost and weigh more, and their accessories are different. For occasional small anchor holes, that extra capacity may reduce rather than improve value. For larger concrete drilling or extended demolition, a compact tool may be undersized.
Rotary drilling
In rotary-only mode, the holder turns without the hammer mechanism striking. On a model that permits it, this may support drilling materials or using accessories that do not need hammer action. The exact chuck, adapter, and accessory instructions control.
Do not place an ordinary round-shank twist bit directly in an SDS holder. Use only a manufacturer-approved chuck or adapter, and observe its restriction on hammer action.
Hammer drilling
In hammer-drilling mode, the bit rotates while the mechanism delivers axial blows. This is the normal mode for compatible masonry drill bits in concrete or masonry.
Use a sharp bit of the right shank and diameter, install the side handle and depth rod when required, and hold the tool in the instructed position. If the bit binds, the tool can react suddenly. A mechanical or electronic clutch helps manage some bind-up events but does not eliminate reaction force.
Hammer-only or chisel mode
In hammer-only mode, the tool strikes without continuously rotating the chisel. It is intended for compatible chisels and model-approved chipping applications.
Some hammers include a chisel-position setting that lets the user rotate the accessory to a convenient angle before selecting hammer-only. Do not confuse that adjustment position with an operating mode, and never run a chisel in a rotating mode unless the exact manual directs it.
Bit and accessory fit
Before buying, verify all of these:
- Holder family: SDS-Plus, SDS-Max, spline, hex, or another system
- Bit diameter and usable/overall length
- Material and application stated by the bit maker
- Required mode
- Shank cleanliness, wear, and lubrication instructions
- Dust-extraction compatibility
- Anchor manufacturer's required hole diameter and depth
The letters SDS alone are not enough. Exact tool, bit, dust attachment, and anchor references matter.
Silica and other safety boundaries
Drilling or chiseling concrete, mortar, brick, block, and stone can create respirable crystalline silica. OSHA's construction standard defines workplace control methods for covered tasks. Home users should still treat the dust as a real hazard: use the exact manufacturer's shroud, extractor, filter, wet method, cleanup process, and PPE instructions that apply.
Disconnect power or remove the battery before inserting accessories or making adjustments. Bits and chisels can become very hot. Wear the eye, hearing, respiratory, hand, and other protection identified for the task, and check for hidden utilities before drilling.
Common mistakes
- Treating SDS-Plus and SDS-Max as interchangeable.
- Choosing only by maximum hole capacity.
- Using a standard bit without an approved adapter.
- Leaving hammer action on with an accessory that prohibits it.
- Operating a chisel in the wrong mode.
- Assuming an anti-rotation clutch prevents all injury.
- Drilling concrete without a source-control plan.

Is SDS-Max always stronger than SDS-Plus?

Can an adapter make every SDS bit fit every hammer?
