A hole saw is a cup-shaped cutting accessory. The teeth or abrasive rim cut a circular kerf while leaving a round plug. A pilot bit starts at the center and helps guide the assembly. The arbor, also called a mandrel in many catalogs, connects the hole saw to the drill.
The pieces may look interchangeable, but thread size, drive pins, shank size, pilot-bit style, hole-saw diameter, material, and tool instructions all affect fit.

Hole saw
Unlike a twist drill that removes most material inside a small hole, a hole saw cuts around the perimeter. The center usually remains as a plug inside the cup. That makes hole saws useful for larger openings for pipe, cable, locksets, and similar work.
Diameter is only the first buying decision. Check the manufacturer's material listing. A bi-metal toothed saw intended for wood and metal, a carbide-tooth saw, and a grit-edge saw can have different approved uses and speeds. Do not assume a cup that fits the arbor is suitable for tile, masonry, stainless steel, or nail-embedded wood.
Cut depth also matters. The cup must be deep enough for the work, and the plug must be cleared according to the instructions. Forcing a packed cup can add heat and load.
Pilot bit
The pilot bit projects beyond the hole-saw rim. It enters first, locates the center, and helps keep the saw from wandering as the rim begins cutting.
Pilot bits are not all the same. A standard high-speed-steel pilot drill and a self-feed screw-tip pilot can behave differently. DEWALT describes one screw-tip pilot as pulling a hole saw through wood for rough-in work, while Milwaukee's arbor instructions call for a pilot hole before the cut. Follow the instructions for the exact arbor, pilot, material, and tool rather than mixing techniques.
A pilot bit also creates a center hole. If the finished work cannot have that hole—or if an existing opening leaves no material for a pilot—use a manufacturer-approved enlargement or guide method. Do not improvise an unstable guide with hands near the cutter.
Mandrel and arbor
For hole saws, mandrel and arbor commonly name the assembly that carries the pilot bit and transmits rotation from the drill to the cup. Retail listings use both words, sometimes on the same product category.
Traditional systems may screw the cup onto arbor threads. Larger cups can add drive pins that transfer torque. Quick-change systems use proprietary or semi-proprietary locks and adapters. “Universal” on one manufacturer's page still has stated size, thread, and product-family boundaries; read those boundaries before buying.

Shank
The shank is the end held by the drill. Common hole-saw arbors use hex shanks, but size varies. The drill chuck must open wide enough and grip the specified shank securely. An impact-rated marking applies only to the exact accessory identified by its maker; it does not make every threaded cup suitable for impact use.
For larger diameters and higher torque, the tool manual may require a side handle, a particular speed, or a different drill type. Size the entire setup—not just the cup.
Plug and plug removal
The plug is the disk left inside the cup. Stop the tool, disconnect its power source as the manual directs, and allow the accessory to cool before clearing it. Milwaukee's arbor instructions specifically warn that a hole saw may be hot.
Never reach toward a rotating cup or hold loose stock by hand. OSHA notes that hole saws and drill bits can bind and create strong kickback, and its drill guidance recommends even pressure rather than forcing the bit. Secure the work with an appropriate fixture or clamp, check the hidden area for utilities, and use the PPE and technique required by the tool and material instructions.

A useful hole-saw purchase is a matched assembly:
- Required finished-hole diameter
- Workpiece material and thickness
- Hole-saw cutting-edge type
- Compatible arbor thread or lock
- Compatible pilot bit
- Shank that fits the intended tool
- Published speed and setup instructions

Why does a hole saw grab near the end of a cut?
