Chuck, Collet, Shank, and Drill Bit: What Fits What?
A chuck or collet grips an accessory by its shank. The bit's cutting diameter describes the hole or cutting size, not necessarily the part held by the tool. A bit can physically enter a chuck and still be wrong for the material, mode, speed, capacity, or attachment system.

Chuck
A chuck is the clamping mechanism at the front of a drill. A common three-jaw chuck closes around a round or suitably shaped shank.
A 1/2-inch chuck describes chuck capacity—the maximum shank size it is designed to grip under the tool's specifications. It does not mean the drill is approved for every 1/2-inch hole, bit style, hole saw, or material. Tool capacity, bit design, speed, mode, and side-handle instructions remain separate.
Before buying a bit, check the tool's full chuck range. An oversized shank will not fit; a very small shank may be below the chuck's minimum reliable range.
Keyed chuck
A keyed chuck uses a separate chuck key to tighten or loosen the jaws. Use the correct key and tighten at the positions specified by the manual. Remove the key before starting the tool.
Do not use a substitute tool that can damage the gear teeth, and do not leave the key attached by a string or chain while operating.
Keyless chuck
A keyless chuck is tightened by hand according to the manual. The sleeve and spindle-lock behavior vary by model.
DEWALT warns not to tighten a chuck by gripping it and briefly running the motor. That shortcut can cause loss of control and hand injury. Remove the battery or disconnect power before changing the accessory.
Collet
A collet is a sleeve-based clamping system commonly used on routers, rotary tools, and some trim tools. The collet must match the shank size and the tool's approved system.
A 1/4-inch collet is not a flexible substitute for every nearby metric shank. Do not force a shank into the wrong collet or rely on partial insertion. Check the manual's insertion depth, clean condition, nut, and tightening method.
Shank
The shank is the part of a bit or accessory held by the chuck, collet, or dedicated holder. Shank diameter and cutting diameter can differ.
Common families include:
- Round shank for many drill chucks
- 1/4-inch hex shank for compatible quick-change holders and chucks
- SDS-plus and SDS-max for different rotary-hammer systems
- Model-specific spline, Starlock, or proprietary accessory interfaces in other tool categories
“SDS” alone is not a complete fit statement. SDS-plus and SDS-max are different systems.
Hex shank
A hex shank has flat sides. Impact drivers commonly use a 1/4-inch hex quick-change holder, but the exact retention format and accessory rating still matter.
A hex shank can also be used in many drill chucks if the manual allows it. That does not make every hex accessory impact-rated or suitable for every torque and speed.
Drill bit
A drill bit has at least two relevant dimensions: cutting diameter and shank size. It also has a material/application design and usable length.
Match:
- Shank system and size
- Chuck or holder capacity
- Cutting diameter and tool capacity
- Wood, metal, masonry, tile, or another intended material
- Rotation-only, hammer, or rotary-hammer mode
- Speed range and lubricant/cooling guidance when specified
- Usable drilling depth, not just overall length
Makita's SDS-plus metal bit is a useful warning against shortcuts: the shank fits an SDS-plus system, but the manufacturer specifies rotation-only use. Attachment system does not determine operating mode.
Common mistakes
- Reading chuck size as maximum hole size.
- Matching only the bit's cutting diameter.
- Treating all hex-shank accessories as impact-rated.
- Treating SDS-plus and SDS-max as interchangeable.
- Using hammer mode because the shank fits a hammer.
- Confusing overall bit length with usable drilling depth.
- Tightening a chuck by running the motor.
Safety boundary
Remove the battery or disconnect power before accessory changes. Clamp the work where practical, use the specified auxiliary handle, and keep hands away from the bit. Bits can remain hot after use. Stop if the bit binds and follow the model's jam/reaction instructions.
Frequently asked questions
Can a 1/2-inch chuck drill a 1-inch hole?
Possibly with an approved bit or hole saw whose shank fits, but chuck capacity alone does not prove the drill's application capacity. Check the exact tool manual and accessory.
Can a hex bit go in a normal drill chuck?
Many can when the size and tool instructions allow it. Verify the bit's intended tool, material, speed, and impact rating.
Does a bit that fits work in hammer mode?
No. The bit manufacturer and tool manual must support the material and mode.
