CFM measures airflow volume. MPH measures air speed. PSI measures pressure. SCFM is an airflow value reported using stated standard conditions. These labels answer different questions, so the largest number does not automatically identify the better blower, compressor, or pneumatic setup.

The useful comparison is a pair: CFM with MPH for a blower, and delivered CFM or SCFM at the required PSI for an air tool.

CFM

CFM means cubic feet per minute. It measures volume flow: how many cubic feet of air pass a point in one minute. NIST's conversion factors give 1 CFM as approximately 0.4719474 liters per second.

On a leaf blower, more CFM generally means the tool can move a broader volume of air. That can help push a wider row of dry leaves or move a larger loose pile. CFM does not tell you how fast the air exits the nozzle, how concentrated the stream is, or how the tool performs with wet, packed debris.

On a compressor, airflow belongs with pressure. A nailer may list a minimum air-delivery requirement at 90 PSI. A compressor's delivered airflow at that pressure is more useful than its maximum tank-pressure headline.

Common mix-up: CFM cannot be converted into MPH from two catalog numbers alone. The outlet area, nozzle, measurement point, operating mode, and test method matter.

MPH

MPH means miles per hour. In a blower listing, it describes air velocity at the measured point, commonly near or at the nozzle. One mile per hour equals exactly 0.44704 meters per second.

A focused, faster stream can help lift debris that is stuck to a surface. But a narrow nozzle can increase velocity while the total volume differs. That is why a high MPH number by itself does not prove that a blower clears a yard faster.

  • CFM and MPH together
  • The nozzle used for each rating
  • Whether the number requires a temporary boost mode

  • Runtime conditions and speed setting

PSI

PSI means pounds-force per square inch. It is a pressure unit: force distributed over area. One PSI is approximately 6.894757 kilopascals.

For compressed-air tools, PSI helps identify the operating-pressure range. It is not airflow. A compressor can have a high maximum tank pressure and still deliver less air than a continuously demanding tool needs.

Match the system in this order:

  1. Find the pneumatic tool's operating-pressure range.
  2. Find its minimum CFM or SCFM requirement at a stated PSI.
  3. Compare the compressor's delivered airflow at that pressure.
  4. Verify hose, regulator, coupler, fitting, and accessory ratings.
  5. Follow the lowest applicable limit in the system.

Do not use a maximum-PSI label as permission to exceed the tool, hose, tank, regulator, or fitting instructions.

SCFM

SCFM means standard cubic feet per minute. It reports airflow using referenced standard conditions so that stated flows can be compared more consistently. The exact reference conditions and test method still matter; “standard” is not a promise that every manufacturer page used identical assumptions.

Common mix-up: SCFM is not simply a more impressive version of CFM. Treat the exact test pressure and published conditions as part of the specification.

What CFM at PSI means

CFM at PSI or SCFM at PSI is a pairing. It tells you the compressor's delivered airflow while operating at the stated pressure. That pairing can be compared with the air tool's minimum requirement when both values use compatible terms and conditions.

Example: Makita lists one current pin nailer with a minimum recommended air delivery at 90 PSI and a separate operating-pressure range. Those values belong to that nailer. They should not be copied onto every nailer or used to create a universal compressor size.

How to read a listing

For a blower, record:

CFM + MPH + nozzle + operating mode + battery + operating weight + runtime conditions

For a pneumatic tool, record:

operating PSI + required CFM/SCFM at PSI + hose/fitting requirements + duty pattern

For a compressor, record:

delivered CFM/SCFM at required PSI + tank capacity + duty guidance + outlet/fitting details

Compare values measured under like conditions. A maximum number from boost mode and a normal-mode number are not a fair pair.

Safety boundary

Airflow and pressure labels are not safety ratings. Follow the exact tool and compressor manuals, keep hoses and couplers within their ratings, and use the required eye, hearing, and other protection.
